Creating Watercolor Swatch + Gradient Watercoloring (VIDEO & GIVEAWAY)

April 2, 2020

Hello there! I hope you are staying safe and healthy- while there are lots of uncertainties, crafting can be a great source of relaxation and self-care. Make sure to take some time to take care of yourself and carve out a “me-time” when you are staying indoors.

Today’s blog post and a video tutorial are special in a couple of different ways. First, this is my longest video tutorial yet! I usually try to keep my videos simple and short, but I wanted to share a lot of things with you today, so hope you do not mind! If you want to see more long progress videos, let me know and I am happy to plan those for the future!

The second reason for this blog post being special is because Altenew is celebrating its birthday this week! Altenew turns 6 this month and we are doing some fun blog hops, giveaways, and inspiration sharing. I think it’s a welcome distraction to the current situation that everyone is going through. I am definitely sending you lots and lots of hugs!

This card was truly a relaxing, therapeutic project to work on. It took me a while, I won’t lie, but it was a great way to de-stress and relax. Watercoloring is just so much fun to do and it was a great way to break out my brand-new watercolor pan set and use it along with my new favorite stamp set.

Today’s video tutorial is packed with step-by-step progress and share my way of creating a quick watercolor swatch, it is a long one, so grab a tea or coffee and relax while following me along!

Watch the tutorial below or HERE on Youtube

I started with watercolor swatch – I do this for any new sets so I can understand the color ranges better before working on any projects:

And below are more project photos from today’s tutorial:

I hope you enjoyed today’s video and project!

Beautifully painted and I love how you created your swatches. My favorite stamp set is Wonderland. I love the selection of big and small floral images, that I can watercolor or paint them, and it has an amazing selection of sentiments as well.

Hi from Vancouver Island, Canada. Happy 6th Anniversary Altenew! Nicole, your video was great & I appreciate the step by step instruction on how you created this gorgeous card. Watercolouring is my favourite medium, but I confess, I’m a little intimidated by it. I love the vibrant colours I see when Altenew Pan sets or Watercolour Brush Markers are used. If I happen to win, I may just invest in one of them. Thanks.

Hi from Dacula Georgia. Your card is beautiful. The flower itself is gorgeous but you really brought it to life with the differences in color. Thank you for the video.

Hi from Fairfax, VA, USA. I have to admit that I am not a water colorist! I have the watercolor set, the bigger one from Altenew, but have not cracked it open yet. I am scared to! Therefore I don’t have a favorite, but if I were to try one (and I promise I will!!!,) it would be to try the Amazing You stamp set. I enjoyed your watercolors and the corresponding palette you created for the pan of paints. 🙂

Hi from Houston! Beautiful cards. I need to pull my watercolors out more often. The results you are getting with Altenew’s watercolors is amazing.

Happy Holidays and for those who are celebrating, Merry Christmas- Many of us are spending today in an unusual way this year, and many of us are also remembering those we lost. I ask that you keep others in your thoughts this holiday season 💕 sending hugs and loves to your way ❤️❤️

Made cookies and cheesecake brownies for our next door neighbors who are spending today alone. I added a little touch with stamps and inks to dress up the cookie boxes 🎁

Happy view 🥰🥰 New ink storage system for my office/studio desk. I wanted the most used inks right at my fingertips and these Alex drawers hold them perfectly. I am keeping both full sized and cubes together, along with 1 mini cube blending tool for each color family. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 #scrapsandstamps #inkstorage #craftroom #craftroomorganization #homestudio
Good morning and happy Saturday lovlies!! 👋🏻👋🏻 I just realized my last post about 3-4 months ago was a glance at my studio. Lots of things happened in the past few months and Ive been just too stressed out that I lost my desire to craft. 😣Its been a rough yr for everyone and Im ready for a new start! 😍 Are you?? Im going to start working towards getting some routines where I can feel better and add creativity back to life. Why wait till Jan? We can start now 💕

I just moved and finally got around to finishing up my studio. Im such a perfectionist that it took me a while to get everything where I wanted. 😅 Im happy how it turned out and grateful that I can still have a place to work and craft. Im excited to share projects with you soon 🥰🥰🥰

Took a couple of days off this week to recharge - mental break helps a lot! 👍🏻 While I enjoyed stay-home break, I finished swatching all of #danielsmithwatercolors - now I’ll build my own palette from these and start doing some watercolor with them. Seeing all these made me really happy 🥰🥰 Swatching watercolors are one of my fav ways to distress. What creative projects are you working on this weekend?? #watercolorswatches #watercolor #danielsmithwatercolor #danielsmithartistsmaterials #colorswatches
Hello, beautiful! I decided to do something new and challenging during this #stayathome time. Took a beginner calligraphy class by @piecescalligraphy and I cant believe how fast 90min went by!! 😍😍 I have a lot of practice to do but really enjoyed learning. These are some of the things we did. My p’s are pretty horrible 😂😂 Cant wait for the next session!

Happy Monday everyone- 💕💕 I was itching for a change so the other day I moved things around a bit in my studio. (This happens more often than not 😂) Even just a tiny bit of change can bring a big difference and give a fresh feel to your daily norm. Controlling what we can and not losing hope 🙏🏻 I wish you a fabulous and lovely week ahead 💙

More therapeutic watercoloring session - I find taking the time to color each image with watercolor really helps me to relax. I think it has to do with a slow moving, soft transition of the pigments and water.

This card was made using a brand new #altenewstatementflowers stamp set and #altenewspringgarden
